Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Strategic Plan?

The Strategic Plan is a long-term roadmap that outlines Temple’s priorities, guiding principles, and direction for the years ahead. It explains how the university will focus its efforts to strengthen student success, advance research with public benefit, and deepen engagement with Philadelphia.

Why is Temple updating the plan now?

Higher education is changing quickly, and Temple must adapt to evolving student needs, demographic shifts, workforce expectations, and regional opportunities. Updating the plan helps ensure that the university remains focused and prepared for the future.

How does the Strategic Plan relate to the Campus Development Plan?

The Campus Development Plan is one of the major enablers of the Strategic Plan. It translates strategic goals into physical investments by shaping how classrooms, research spaces, student areas, and community-facing facilities evolve to support the university’s future.

Who participated in the development of the plan?

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners contributed through listening sessions, surveys, committee work, and interviews. Their input shaped the priorities and principles of the plan.

What was the process for creating the plan?

The planning process included community engagement, data analysis, benchmarking, and committee discussions. Through multiple rounds of review, the Strategic Plan Executive Committee alongside external experts helped shape the plan.

Is the plan final or can it evolve over time?

The plan provides long-term direction but is flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances. It will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains relevant and effective.

How will Temple afford this plan?

The Strategic Plan is designed with financial sustainability at its core. Many initiatives focus on strengthening efficiency, reducing duplication, improving operational alignment, and directing resources toward the university’s highest priorities. The plan also supports new revenue opportunities through enrollment growth, research activity, philanthropy, and partnerships. Rather than adding significant new costs, the plan creates a clearer framework for investing wisely and using resources more effectively.

How does this plan relate to the Flying Further plan?

The new plan builds on work that began during Flying Further. It incorporates lessons learned and responds to current institutional needs while continuing elements that remain aligned with Temple’s goals. Initiatives from Flying Further that align with the new priorities may continue or evolve. Others may be completed or restructured based on current strategic needs.

How will Temple track progress on the plan?

Progress will be monitored through regular reporting and through the Progress and Impact Dashboard, which highlights milestones and outcomes related to each priority.

What changes should students expect as the plan is implemented?

Students may see expanded academic support, improved advising, new opportunities for experiential learning and research, and enhancements that strengthen student success and well-being.

How will the plan affect faculty and staff?

As units align their goals and operations with the plan, there will be new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, professional development, and resource support.
